While on JAX’s marketing team, we were working on a brand refresh which included updating many of the materials provided to customers in the stores. This included updating the gift cards. The previous gift cards were cluttered with many images and spoke to the general customer rather than any specific customer. I was tasked with writing one-liners to be used on the new gift cards.
To inspire the copy, I thought about the gift cards within the context of someone purchasing a gift card as an actual gift. We wanted the gift cards to be meaningful to both the giver and recipient. I wrote a list of one-liner options to be used for customers who are passionate about specific outdoor activities and lifestyles.

The Outdoor Enthusiast
The JAX Outdoor Gear stores cater to customers who not only enjoy specific activities such as camping and hiking, but also people who move to the state of Colorado and are looking to try out a variety of outdoor experiences. These gift cards were designed to speak to the experienced adventurer as well as beginning explorer.
The Hunter and Angler
People who hunt and fish have a very deep connection to the activity. Many grow up hunting and fishing with their families so it’s a tradition passed down. Even if someone is new to either activity, chances are, they come back with a story to share. These gift cards were created to demonstrate the idea of participating in an outdoor activity, and a story, greater than yourself.
The Homesteader, Farmer, or Rancher
Whether someone grows vegetables in their backyard as a hobby, is a beekeeper, or raises livestock and tends crops for a living, there’s a deep connection with the land and the ability for someone to cultivate with purpose. These gift cards tap into that connection that draws so many people to the farming and ranching lifestyle.
